Simon Cathrine
1. Simon, you have been a long time competitor and load organiser at Hibaldstow, however plans have changed for you this year. What are you up to?
Exciting times, I have been working over in the middle east in my normal capacity as an engineer. Spent time designing the Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi. Am back for a few weeks then out to Qatar to work on the 2022 World Cup stadia. My jumping has suffered though. I did my first jump since April yesterday. It is nice to be back in the air. Oh, and I got married recently to my long suffering bird Jo Burns. (Editor: I am not sure who is suffering the most).
2. What skydiving opportunities are there for you in Qatar?
At the moment there is no dropzone nor wind tunnel in Qatar. There are rumours of plans that these are being considered. Dubai is only a 40 minute flight away so I will just pop there and jump. I will be working for the Qatari government so on my agenda for the first meeting under any other business is a wind tunnel and dropzone.
3. At this's UK Nationals, you have a surprise scratch tell. Tell us about them?
Hahaha, yeah it is not a bad line up. Put together by my old teamie Helen Arnold from SonicNutz, we have Liz Matthews and Joey Jones. I feel quite privileged to be on such a good line up. We managed a practice round yesterday which was ok. This year will be an interesting event as we have some very different styles which should compliment each other. Although I do miss turning up at the DZ for nationals as a trained team, it is nice to have no pressure or expectations. I have a couple of teams to watch as well which I have been coaching - Anti Matter and Tr4ck. So I should get to spend plenty of time with them too. Looking forward to it.
