Today was a great day at the dropzone and we finally had a full day of jumping. A quick round up of some of the action from today.
In the VFS, the QFX boys have had 2 excellent first rounds. However in round 3, they lost quite a few points to camera bust unfortunately. Filming VFX is particularly difficult as grips can easily be hidden behind bodies arms and legs. They lie in 8th place out of 9.
The BritChicks have been doing some fantastic jumps and joint 6th place along with Russia and UAE after 3 jumps. They have upped their game since Nationals and have an 11.33 avg after 3 rounds. Speaking to Julie Woodrow and Lesley Gale on the team, said “Round 3 went sweet! Laura and Samurai did the most awesome hops on the block 22’s and we pulled back a point. We are supper happy at the moment. Another point to mention between R2 and R3 is that we managed to pinch the Swiss chocolate from their fridge leaving a BritChicks calling card with our complements. Come back tomorrow for the next episode. Today is CYPRES day at the dropzone and there are hundreds of purple CYPRES t-shirts around.”
Al and Pixie in the Freestyle event are one of our big hopefuls for a medal. They lie in the Bronze position after 2 rounds. The USA are snapping at their heels after catching up a few points in the compulsory round. They are seasoned competitors and I am sure they will hold their nerve.
In the 4-way, Dave Head is jumping with the Open 4-way and the Femal 4-way due to Al Thompson being ill at the moment. Time was a little tight bearing in mind the return from the landing area requires a speed boat ride. He arrived in the nick of time and ran to the emplaning point while 3 of the UK delegation packed his rig by committee and biked it out to him. Meanwhile Foxy and Milko were trying to remain calm and unflustered whilst look for Aaron Faith who was still AWOL on a 5 minute call.
To finish with today, I thought it might be nice to have a short interview with Martin Soulsby our Head of Delegation:
1. Martin, you both the BPA chairman and the Head of Delegation. What does the role here involve and how much hard work is involved in it?
The main aim of my role here it to make things as easy as possible for our competitors. From making sure all the registrations and accommodation are correct before they arrive, making sure everyone is where they are meant to be; and small things like water to the delegation room and organising protests and complaints. But I am also helped by the 2 team Managers. Also there is an amount of politics involving IPC and FAI who are heavily represented here.
2. You’re known as an 8-way competitor with the likes of Micro Clim8te and VNE. How does this event compare to other World Champs you have been to?
This just does not compare to any other World Cup or World Meet I have been to, this has set the bar so high I cannot imagine anywhere else can even come close. We are staying in 4 star hotels with first class food. An example is normally the delegation tent is an ex-army green tent with a dirt floor in 30degree heat. Here we have air conditioned rooms with a fridge full of water, wi-fi and a large LCD TV. The organisers really cannot do enough to make this the best World Meet ever.
